Host a blind wine tasting and rank the bottles together
A blind wine tasting is a fun way to find out whether anyone at the table can tell the splurge bottle from the bargain one. Wrap each bottle in a paper bag, give it a letter, and add the letters to a Rankd. Guests taste through every pour, jot notes, and rank the wines privately on their phones. Reveal the group order first, then pull off the bags. The winner is the table’s favorite, not the pick of whoever talks most about tannins.

Why ranking beats a regular poll here
- Bagged, lettered bottles keep labels and prices from steering the ranking.
- Private rankings let a quiet guest disagree with the self-described wine expert.
- Ranking every pour shows the order across the table, not just one favorite.
How it works
- Add the question and 3 to 30 options
- Send one private link to the group
- Everyone ranks privately, in about a minute
- You reveal the winner
Tips
- Stick to one grape or style, like six Pinot Noirs, so guests compare like with like.
- Include one bargain bottle and one splurge for a good reveal.
- Have someone who isn’t tasting bag and letter the bottles.
- Pour small tastes, and set out water and plain bread between wines.
Questions
How many wines should a blind tasting have?
Four to eight is easy to manage. Past that, palates get tired and the later wines tend to get ranked at random.
Can people see how I ranked?
No. Each person’s order stays private. Everyone sees the group’s final order and where they personally landed, never anyone else’s individual ranking.
Is it free? Does everyone need the app?
Rankd is free and runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download. Friends open the link from any group chat (iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, email) and rank in about a minute.
