Questions

How does a ranked-choice (instant-runoff) count work?

Everyone ranks the options. Each round, every ballot counts for its highest-ranked option still in the race. If one option has more than half of those votes, it wins. If not, the option with the fewest votes is removed and its ballots move to their next choice, and the count repeats.

What does “exhausted” mean?

A ballot is exhausted when every option it ranked has been removed. It no longer counts toward the majority in later rounds.

How are ties for last place broken?

The calculator removes whichever tied option had fewer votes in the most recent earlier round where they differed. If they were tied in every round, all of them are removed together. If every remaining option is tied, the result is a tie.

How should I type the ballots?

One ballot per line with the best choice first, separated by “>” or commas, like “Tacos > Sushi > Pizza”. Put a number and a colon in front for many identical ballots, like “12: Tacos > Sushi”. You can paste columns copied from a spreadsheet too.

Is my data saved?

No. The count runs in your browser and the ballots you type are never sent to Rankd.
