Rankd vs group chat polls
Polls in iMessage, WhatsApp and Slack are great for quick questions. They break down when there are several good options: everyone gets one vote, second choices are thrown away, and people watch the count and pile on. Rankd asks everyone to rank the options privately, then reveals the one the group likes most overall.
| Group chat poll | Rankd | |
|---|---|---|
| How people vote | One pick each | Everyone puts all the options in order |
| Second choices | Ignored | Counted, so the winner is the option most people like |
| Seeing votes as they come in | Usually visible, so people follow the crowd | Hidden until the organizer reveals |
| Works across apps | Only inside that one app | One link works in iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, email |
| Result | A vote count | A full ranked order, plus where you split from the group |
| Effort | A tap | About a minute, plus a one-time Google sign-in |
Questions
When is a regular group chat poll better?
For a quick yes/no or a choice between two options, a built-in poll is faster. Rankd is worth it when there are three or more options and you want the choice most of the group is happy with.
Why does ranking give a better answer than one vote?
With one vote each, a small group that agrees on one option can beat a choice that everyone else likes as their second pick. Ranking counts everyone’s whole order, so broadly liked options win.
Do my friends need the Rankd app?
No. Rankd runs in the browser. Friends open the link from any chat and sign in with Google once so each person ranks once.
