Pick trivia night categories players will love
A trivia host’s nightmare is a round nobody can answer and a room gone quiet. Categories only the host loves do that. Before you write a single question, put the category ideas in a Rankd and let players rank them. Build the night around the top five or six, and you spend your prep time on rounds people actually want.
- ’90s music
- Movie quotes
- World geography
- Sports
- Food and drink
- Science and nature
- TV sitcoms
- History
Free. Edit the options, then send one link to your group.
Why ranking beats a regular poll here
- Players pick topics they are excited about, so rounds land better.
- A broad top five tends to balance out the group’s strengths.
- The ranked order tells you which round to save for the finale.
How it works
- Add the question and 3 to 30 options
- Send one private link to the group
- Everyone ranks privately, in about a minute
- You reveal the winner
Tips
- Send it a week ahead so you have time to write questions.
- Keep categories broad enough to fill a full round each.
- Rank only the topics, never the questions, so nobody gets a preview.
Questions
Can teams rank, or only individual players?
Each person ranks under their own name, so every player has a say. If you would rather count teams, have one person per team rank.
Can people see how I ranked?
No. Each person’s order stays private. Everyone sees the group’s final order and where they personally landed, never anyone else’s individual ranking.
Is it free? Does everyone need the app?
Rankd is free and runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download. Friends open the link from any group chat (iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, email) and rank in about a minute.
