Run an office Halloween costume contest from one Slack link
Office costume contests have their own logistics. People are spread across floors and meetings all day, some are dialing in from home, and nobody wants to vote by applause in the break room. Photograph each costume during the parade, add the photos to a Rankd, and post the link in Slack, Teams or an all-staff email. Coworkers rank from their work desktop or phone between meetings, and you reveal the winner before everyone logs off.
- Kim as a walking spreadsheet
- Finance team as the Ghostbusters
- Raj as the out-of-order printer
- Lena as a giant coffee cup
- The help desk as the Avengers
- Ben as “reply all”
Free. Add your own options (these are just examples), then send one link to your group.
Why ranking beats a regular poll here
- Remote coworkers can show their costume on camera, send a screenshot, and compete with the office.
- Ranking every costume keeps one big department from deciding the contest by headcount.
- People rank between meetings, so the vote doesn’t depend on who made it to the parade.
How it works
- Add the question and 3 to 30 options
- Send one private link to the group
- Everyone ranks privately, in about a minute
- You reveal the winner
Tips
- Make one Rankd per category, like best overall, best group and best remote costume, and post the links together.
- Take photos against the same blank wall so every costume gets a fair shot.
- Set the reveal for a set time, like 4pm, so the winner is announced before people head home.
Questions
Does it work on locked-down work computers?
Yes. Rankd runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Coworkers click the link from Slack, Teams or email, rank the costumes, and type a name.
Can people see how I ranked?
No. Each person’s order stays private. Everyone sees the group’s final order and where they personally landed, never anyone else’s individual ranking.
Is it free? Does everyone need the app?
Rankd is free and runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download. Friends open the link from any group chat (iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, email) and rank in about a minute.
