How does the Borda count work?
Each ballot gives points by position. With N options, a first choice earns N−1 points, a second choice N−2, and so on down to 0 for last. The option with the most points wins.
What about ballots that don’t rank every option?
Options a ballot leaves out get 0 points from that ballot. The ranked ones still get points by their position.
Borda count or ranked-choice (instant runoff)?
Borda rewards options that are broadly liked, even if few people put them first. Instant runoff looks for an option a majority prefers, eliminating the weakest each round. They can pick different winners from the same ballots; paste the same list into both calculators to compare.
How should I type the ballots?
One ballot per line, best first, separated by “>” or commas. Put “12:” in front for 12 identical ballots.
Is my data saved?
No. The count runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to Rankd.
